The first three weeks of the semester are already over and we learned a lot of things about new media, it´s applications and tools. Before I started to attend the class I did not really know what to expect of it since “New Media” is a really broad term. In the following, I am going to point out the new tools we used while exploring the possibilities of new media thus far.

I always knew that I´m not a specialist using the computer and all the different tools and functions. But at least I thought that I have a basic knowledge of the different possibilities and applications provided by today´s media. I realized quickly within the first class that in fact I have only a minimized knowledge of it.

I already learned a lot during our “New Media” classes within the first three weeks of the semester. We got started by registering for different web pages where we created, for example, a new yahoo.de e-mail address. We registered for delicious.com, twitter.com and netvibes.com. Furthermore, within the last week we started to develop our own website using weebly.com.

While exploring the new tools I was really surprised that there are so many different applications provided online which can support and help us in many different ways and especially in daily use. I was also surprised by the fact that these new tools were easily approachable, even though, I am a non- professional.

Particularly I really liked the two tools of delicious.com and netvibes.com. We probably all know the problem that we store useful bookmarks on our own computer while doing researches. Especially during stressful handover dates everyone of us probably experienced that we go to the university computer room to do further work on our tasks. And suddenly we realize that we left half of our research work on our computer at home. To avoid problems of this kind I think delicious.com is such a great solution. You can collect all different types of websites and links and save those as bookmarks online so that you have direct access to them from every computer. And there is also the possibility to discover useful links to interesting topics by looking at the bookmarks of other people. Moreover, you can even tag the bookmarks into certain categories to make it neatly arranged.

The second tool I like best thus far is netvibes.com. At netvibes.com we all created our own personal dashboard to monitor and observe all our important online activities within one glance. Therefore, it is not of necessity anymore to log in separately for every side. We now have it all on our dashboard, on one page. I am going to use these two tools a lot now since it saves a lot of time and is really organized.

After these new experiences with new media I feel more confident in trying new things online and to discover more possibilities provided online. I am looking forward to get to know more important and useful tools and functions that I can use within daily practice and as well for preparing work for university and later on for my own classes as a teacher. Furthermore, I am really keen to get used to working with weebly.com creating my own structured and interesting website.
